Due to the rising costs of tuition and other education-related expenses more and more college students from around the country have been turning to all sorts of financial aid to pay for the costs that are associated with going to school. Most students realize that there is an abundance of aid that is in existence, but many don’t really understand how they should go about applying for such aid, and some simply don’t know where to start.
The good news is that applying for financial aid isn’t really that complicated, and when you are ready to begin there is one application that you should always fill out first before you do anything else. This application is also known as the FAFSA, or free application for student aid, and it is the universal application for federal student aid that is provided by the government. By filling out a FAFSA on-time, and in a proper manner, you can assure yourself of being in the contention for the vast litany of federal student aid that is out there, and really nothing else is required on your part in order to become eligible for this wealth of financial aid.
The FAFSA won’t make you eligible for any sort of private student loan funding, and any other sorts of specialized scholarships and grants. It is however the best place to start when you know that you must acquire additional funding to pay for school because it is always better to look for private student loans, and other kinds of private funding only after you know where you stand in terms of federal aid.
Federal Aid First
This is because federal student loans, in combination with federal grants and scholarships are the best types of aid to receive due to their low finance charges, and other sorts of preferable financing terms. Once you have received your award letter from your school that provides a detailing of all of the federal aid you have received, you can then move forward by applying for other kinds of private aid. Until then it is always a smart move to first fill out a FAFSA to learn where you stand when it comes to federal aid before you do anything else.
