While the Pell Grant can provide you with a substantial amount of money for your college education, it may not be enough to cover all of your education-related expenses. This is why it is important to consider your other options when it comes to getting the necessary financial aid for the upcoming school year.
Grants don’t have to be paid back, and therefore should always be on your radar when you are taking inventory of the various form of aid that can provide the assistance you need to pay for school. The following is a brief accounting of the some of the most popular federal education grants that can give you the funding you need, and most of these can be applied for via the FAFSA form.
The Academic Competitiveness Grant
The Academic Competitiveness Grant, or ACG Grant for short, is a federal education grant that is provided each year to students who have completed a rigorous set of coursework, and have thus achieved academically. The ACG Grant can provide you with up to 750 dollars during your first year of undergraduate study, and up to 1,300 dollars during your second year of undergraduate coursework if you can qualify.
The National SMART Grant
The National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant, or National SMART Grant, is an award that is geared towards providing money to students who are willing to complete certain degree programs. Students majoring in various engineering, mathematics, science, and technology programs may qualify, and the award amounts are fairly significant upon being accepted.
You can expect to receive up to 4,000 dollars during either your third, or fourth years of undergraduate coursework if you are able to secure this award, and you must make sure that you’re maintaining the appropriate grade point average to be considered for this award.
The Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant
The Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant, or FSEOG grant is an award that is designed to benefit students that exhibit a very high level of financial need for additional money to attend college. This award is very similar to the Pell Grant in this respect, and the FSEOG Grant is only given to students with exceptionally low EFC values that are at, or very close to zero. If you are able to qualify for this award you may be able to receive between 100, and 4,000 dollars for that academic year, and because this grant is disbursed on an annual basis, you may be able to qualify for each year you are studying as an undergraduate student.
The TEACH Grant
The TEACH Grant, or Teach Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant Program, is a federal education grant that is designed to benefit students who are willing to accept the responsibility of teaching to either elementary school, or secondary school students that come from low-income families upon graduation.
To qualify for this award you must have a grade point average that is above the appropriate cutoff thresholds for that particular school year, and you must be able to sign a form that will commit you to teaching where you are most needed once you graduate. The award amounts for this grant are substantial, and you can expect to receive up to 4,000 dollars per year that you are able to qualify for this federal grant.
